Discover 2 Critical Things Your Website May Be Lacking
There are millions of websites online today which have 2 critical things missing; meta tags.
What are meta tags?
There are 2 main meta tags that have a direct impact on how your website performs in the search engine rankings.
Meta Title: The meta title is used by the search engine robots to help identify what your site is about and then index it accordingly so people can find it.
The meta title is the text at the top of your internet browser window and it also appears as the main heading on the search engine results pages.
Have a look at your own website now; does your meta title say “Welcome”, “Untitled” or perhaps nothing at all?
If your pages don’t have a meta title or have a poorly written one which is the same for every page of your site then you’re shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to SEO.
Your meta title should contain your chosen keywords for each particular page rather than just your company name or telephone number.
Meta Description: The meta description doesn’t appear anywhere on your site itself but is still very important.
The meta description is the two lines of text that appear under your meta title on the search engine results pages and these should incorporate your chosen keywords as well trying to encourage people to click through to your site.
Type your own company name into Google or Bing now to see for yourself what meta description your homepage has.
As with meta titles you should have a unique meta description for every page on your website.
Who’s responsible for your meta tags?
When a website is being built quite often meta tags are often an afterthought. The web designer does their bit and then a copywriter comes along and writes all the text.
Great, but who takes responsibility for your meta tags? Many web designers don’t see it as part of their job and the same goes for a large proportion of copywriters (not us though!).
If you can’t get a straight answer from your web designer or copywriter regarding your meta tags and they end up being ignored, your website may not be performing as well as it could be.
Follow the advice above and see for yourself the difference meta tags can make.
